Does your MA homeowner's insurance policy cover you for flooding?
One of the questions most often asked is if MA homeowners insurance will give coverage for damage incurred due to flooding. Here the answer is usually no. Flood insurance will need to be purchased separately or through the federal government's National Flood Insurance Program. While flood insurance should be purchased if you live in flood prone such as coastal cities or towns or those regions where natural disasters such as hurricanes are prevalent, flooding can occur anywhere and has been known to occur in areas previously considered low risk.
One of your main weapons to help financially support you in the event of a loss of your home or possessions is adequate insurance. To ensure that you have enough financial coverage to protect you from loss, it’s an excellent idea to write out an inventory of your possessions and list their value, rather than take a guess. Your home inventory may be much more important in the event that you ever need to claim on your flood or home insurance – this document, together with receipts, photographs and appraisals of jewelry items can help your insurer confirm the losses and process the claim promptly.
Don’t delay taking out the coverage you need. Being uninsured can be tremendously costly. Whether you need a MA homeowners insurance policy, or you wish to purchase flood insurance, one of our agents would be pleased to assist.
